5 Steps to Landing the Right Job for You - CareerAlley

5 Steps to Landing the Right Job for You - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Most of us spend more time working at a job than looking for one, so when it comes time to embark on a job hunt, you may feel a little rusty and out of practice. On top of that, many people are anxious about their future. How long will they be out of a job? What will happen to them next? You can regain control over the job hunt by keeping it simple. There are really just 5 basic steps to job search success, so take a look at them one at a time. Check out those steps below as well as how you can excel at each of them. Suggested Reading:Life Coaching: 7 Essential Lessons for Life and Career Coaching! Step 1: Define Your Career Objective. Many job hunters, particularly those people who have just lost their job, dont take the time to complete this step. But doing so can help to better ensure that you dont find yourself in this position again. You dont want just any job (even if it might feel like you do!). You want a job for the long-term. That means finding one thats the right fit for your skills, personality, and needs. How to Master This Step: Youre already ahead of most people by actually taking this step, but the next most important thing is to be realistic. Setting an objective that isnt attainable will hurt your job hunt, not help it. If you were let go from a previous position, think about the reasons why. Did you lack the right skills for the position? Was your personality a mismatch for the company? Or is your industry on the decline? A career assessment test can help you gain more insight on the right type of work for you. Step 2: Prepare Your Resume. Whip out an old draft to edit or start fresh. Your resume is often the first thing that potential employers will see, so its a crucial step in the job hunt. And you need an updated resume before you can even begin doing anything else. How to Master This Step: Your goal isnt to detail every single responsibility or accomplishment youve had in your career so far. Its to highlight your most relevant and impressive qualifications. Make sure the resume presents a strong case that youre the right candidate for whatever job youre applying for. Also, dont stop with the [easyazon_link asin=1440562199 locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]resume[/easyazon_link]. Create a strong cover letter that you can easily customize for different positions, gather references and letters of recommendation, and set up a[easyazon_link asin=1492291137 locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]LinkedIn profile[/easyazon_link] if you dont have one already. And above all, proofread. Step 3: Search for Job Openings. Now that you have your resume ready, its time to find places to submit it. This step includes setting up job searches online, letting people know that youre looking, and directly contacting companies where you want to work. How to Master This Step: When it comes to the online job hunt, you want to find as many relevant job openings as possible. That means casting a wide net that reaches as many websites as possible, but also setting narrow enough criteria that it returns jobs that you want to apply for. Industry-specific sites, such as CareersInGovernment.com and HealthJobsUSA.com, are great resources, as well as job search engines that allow you to focus on a particular location. For instance, this JobTonic sub-site allows you to search for job openings in Dallas, TX across multiple job posting sites, saving you from having to check each one individually. As for the offline job hunt, dont be afraid to get in touch with people you havent connected with in a while. Many people are reluctant to be a bother, but the truth is that most of your contacts are more than willing to spare a few minutes to offer you some career guidance or advice. At the same time, youre making them aware that youre looking and what your credentials are. Step 4: Expand Your Network. Whats perhaps the single most important thing that can help you to get a job? Who you know. Now, that doesnt mean you have to be related to or best friends with someone at the company, but if you can find some sort of connection even a minor one its a plus in your hire me column. So check to see who you might know already (know can be a loose term) and find ways to put yourself out there and meet people in the industry or company that interests you. How to Master This Step: Think outside the box: strike up a conversation with your mailman or the barista at Starbucks. You never know who will know someone worth meeting. When you do make a connection whether at the supermarket or a jobs event follow up. Even if they didnt seem like they could offer any help, reach out. Or better yet, offer to be on the lookout for them if needed. Step 5: Interview. Some people feel like theyve already got the job by the time they get to the interview stage, but while its true that they wouldnt be bringing you in unless they already liked you, theres every chance in the world that they feel that way about several other candidates, too. Make sure youre calm, cool, confident, prepared, and perhaps above all friendly and personable. How to Master This Step:[easyazon_link asin=0470457414 locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]Research the company[/easyazon_link] and position for which you are interviewing so that you can speak intelligently about it during your interview. If possible, try to meet with people you know at the company ahead of time to get the inside scoop about the culture and possibly even the person who will be interviewing you. And dont be afraid to practice with common interview questions. You can find plenty of material out there online, and lots of companies today even make apps to help you practice your interview. Why to keep up your job hunt (and your spirits) during the holiday season -

Why to keep up your job hunt (and your spirits) during the holiday season - In an effort to convince you to ramp up your job search efforts during the holidays (click HERE for part 1 and a free ebook offer), Im sharing ideas and insights from some of my colleagues and friends during this holiday week and next. Today, I am happy to share some insights from my friend Walter Akana, of Threshold Consulting. Walter suggests (bold are his ideas, commentary is mine): 1. Put aside the idea about people not hiring during the Holidays. Whether its true or not, it can become an excuse to do nothing. I like this take on the subject. In fact, whether there are jobs to be found or not depends on many factors. Taking the position that it does not matter, and that it is important to move forward with your job hunt regardless, is a very good approach in my book. 2. Stop making your interactions with people about job leads. Instead, focus more on getting to know other people so you can build stronger, long-term relationships. Excellent advice! The majority of people I see who have not been successful at networking are approach their contacts as a job seeker first. The fact is, relationships are key to creating opportunities. So, dont bring your resume to holiday parties. It is okay, however, to bring your business cards! (More about that later!) Walters additional suggestions, which he first offered (and expanded on) in his post Own Your Life. (Be sure to read the original post!) Use this time to refocus on happiness practices to keep your spirits up and create a positive foundation for the New Year: Count your blessings. Practice acts of kindness.   Savor lifes joys.   Thank a mentor/benefactor. Learn to forgive. Invest time and energy in family and friends. Take care of your body. Get A Free Resume Review

Get A Free Resume Review 5 reasons you need a free resume review from MonsterGet resume feedback you can use to land mora interviews. Would a recruiter or hiring manager swipe right on your resume?Your resume is their first impression of you, and often, its the main thing standing between you scoring an interview or getting lost in the shuffle. And thats bedrngnis taking into account that recruiters spend less than a minute on a resumeonly after it makes it through the robots. When you apply to a job online, your application often goes into an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), software that reviews elements of your resume to determine how well youd fit the requirements of the job posting.Wish there was a crystal ball to see what the ATS will have to say about your resume? Weve got something betterand you wont have to polish it after each use. Monsters free resume review gives you feedback using similar technology that the ATS employs. We have a hunch youll be surprised by w hat the assessment catches and how potential employers and recruiters will view you based only on a quick glance at your resume. Here are five reasons why you should get a resume assessment.1. Youre not showing resultsOf course, your resume should include some basic details about your role and responsibilities, but dont neglect to wow them with your accomplishments. One of most important elements of a resume is results, says Kim Monaghan, founder of the Michigan-based professional development company, KBM Coaching and Consulting.Monaghan says to ask yourself one question for each of your jobs How did your work get results for your department or organization in a way that is quantifiable or that you can qualify in some way?Include the respective results as bullet points for each of your jobs, so hiring managers dont just know your laundry list of responsibilities they know what you got done.2. Youre not using the right keywordsWant to know the secret for getting passed the ATS? Its a ll in the job posting.Though you dont want to copy word for word, use some of the same terms they use in the job description in your resume, explains Thomas Harris, founder of the Georgia-based coaching company The Exceptional Skills.Remember, when the employer looks at resumes, he or she is thinking WIIFM (whats in it for me). They want to know that you will benefit them, says Harris. Use the job description as a treasure map for the exact terms and qualifications theyre looking for and include anything relevant to you in your resume.Monsters resume review will tell you if youve included enough relevant keywords and information to show why youre a good fit for the job.Nearly 75% of resumes that go through an ATS are eliminated because they dont meet the requirements the hiring manager specified, such as the right skills, education level, or job titles, according to Monster research.3. Your resume is misleading or unclear Sure, your official title might be Galactic Viceroy of Resear ch Excellence, dean of pizza, or Chief Unicorn Officer, but what the heck does that mean? The resume review will catch confusing job titles and suggest that you change to ones that are more generic. While we never advocate for lying on your resume, you can find the closest standard title to what you do as Chief Unicorn Officer.Could you be catfishing someone with your resume unintentionally? The ATS might take the words and phrases in your resume out of context and think that youre a good fit for petrochemical research when really, youre a journalist who has written about the topic. Its helpful to see how the robots interpret your resume so you can platzset the record straight. To do that, Noelle Johnson, founder of the Nashville-based interview and negotiation coaching company, My Interview Buddy, recommends removing experience bullets that dont have to do with the job at hand.4. You forgot to focus on the formatting Just say no to Comic Sans.As the resume review will point out, you s hould use a standard font because the ATS robots and hiring managers prefer common fonts like Arial or Times New Roman and a simple format thats easy to interpret. Our assessment will also point out if your resume doesnt include all of the standard sections like your experience, education, and skills.Even if you graduated from college thirty years ago, you should still include the section because your resume might not be passed along to recruiters and hiring managers if you dont fill out all the information the ordnungsprinzip requires. And save the creative pie charts, graphs, and icons for the in-person interview. It should be easy for a busy hiring manager to find all of the relevant information like company names, dates, job titles, and accomplishments, says Helen Godfrey, a Houston-based career coach and owner of The Authentic Path.5. You didnt go the extra mile Youve made it this far, and youre so close to a stellar resume Dont stop now.Use Monsters professional resume writing s ervice to have a certified resume writer help you optimize your resume for your industry and preferred role, customize your resume with relevant keywords, get past the robots and, yes, make sure you arent one typo away from your dream job.
